Everything Household Pet can do.

A walkthrough of the app from your first sign-in to sharing a pet's record with your vet. Household Pet keeps one tidy health record for every animal in your home — dogs and cats through to horses and cattle — reminds you about the things that matter on the Australian schedule, and works whether or not you've got signal. You don't need to read this end to end — jump to whatever you're after. Features marked Plus need a Household Pet Plus subscription.

First 10 minutes

Getting started

Household Pet runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android phones and tablets, and everything syncs between them. Install it, create an account and add your first pet — the whole thing takes a few minutes.

  1. Download the app

Get Household Pet from the App Store (iPhone, iPad and Mac) or Google Play (Android). It's free to start, with an optional Plus upgrade for more pets, the AI symptom assistant, vet report PDFs and sitter sharing.
  2. Create your account

Tap Create an account, enter your email and a password, then type the 6-digit code we email you into the verify screen. Prefer not to juggle another password? Use the Apple or Google sign-in buttons on the sign-in screen instead. (Code didn't arrive? Check spam; our mail comes from noreply@au.household.pet.)
  3. Add your first pet

The app takes you straight to “Tell us about your pet”. Pick a species, give a name and sex, then add whatever else you have handy — breed, date of birth, whether they're desexed, colour and markings, microchip number and a photo. Nothing else is required, and you can edit all of it later.
  4. You're in

You land on the Home tab with your pet ready to go. Good first steps: log their last vaccination, tap Set up vaccination schedule, or add a reminder.
Long microchip number? Type it on your computer. Open Add a pet from your computer, fill in the details on a full-size keyboard, then scan the QR code with your phone's camera — the app opens with everything filled in and waits for you to check it and tap save. The code appears once name, species and sex are set, and nothing is sent to us along the way. If the app isn't installed yet, install it, sign up, then scan the same code again — the install itself can't carry the details across. The pet sitter sheet hands its details over the same way. Going the other way — a pet that's already in the app, onto a page you can print? See Send a pet to your computer.

The dashboard

Finding your way around

The app has four tabs: Home, Pets, Reminders and More, along the bottom of the screen (or down the side on some large Android screens).

  • Home — your daily glance. A greeting, the reminders due soonest across every pet (tap See all for the full list), Quick log for logging by voice, and a card per pet. Pending sharing invites and a scheduled account deletion also show up here.
  • Pets — every animal you keep records for, including pets other people have shared with you.
  • Reminders — everything overdue, upcoming and done.
  • More — your plan, sync status, offline settings, data and account controls, and links to help.

Pull down on Home or Reminders any time to check for changes from the rest of your household.

Home — what's due across all your pets, then your pets at a glance.

Profiles

Pets & profiles

Tap a pet on Home or in the Pets tab to open its profile. From top to bottom:

  • The header — photo, name, what the animal is, breed, date of birth with their age worked out, latest weight and microchip. Tap it to edit; the ⋯ menu has Edit pet, Make a pet sitter sheet, Make a rental resume and Delete pet.
  • Add health event and Vet report.
  • Set up vaccination schedule (dogs and cats) — adds the next dose as a reminder.
  • Four shortcut tiles: Health (profile details, weight, documents and notes), Nutrition (the Food folder), Activity (the daily feed) and Care (who has access, the Insurance folder, and grooming and vet-visit history).
  • Upcoming reminders, then the full health log.
  • How is the pet today? at the bottom opens the AI symptom assistant.
A pet's profile — the hub for everything about that animal.

More than dogs and cats

Choose from dog, cat, rabbit, bird, ferret, reptile, horse, cow or other. Each animal is called what it actually is, worked out from its sex, age and whether it's desexed — a young horse reads as a foal, a gelded one as a gelding, a young female cow as a heifer, a castrated bull over two as a bullock — and the word keeps up on its own as the animal gets older. Cattle aren't microchipped, so their profile asks for the NLIS ID / RFID instead; horses keep the microchip field.

Horses and cattle get the same health log, documents, sharing and reminders as any other pet. Automatic vaccination schedules are only available for dogs and cats, so for other species set reminders using the dates agreed with your vet.

Editing a pet

Picked the wrong species when you added a pet? Change it under Edit pet. The app asks first, then replaces any upcoming vaccination reminder with one for the new species — or removes it if there's no schedule for that species. Past health-log entries stay as they are. Changes save even when you're offline and sync once you're back online.

To add another pet, tap Add another pet on Home or in the Pets tab. The free plan includes one pet of your own; pets that other people share with you don't count towards it.

Send a pet to your computer

Some paperwork is easier on a big screen and a proper printer. Two of our free printable pages — the pet sitter sheet (everything a sitter needs while you're away) and the rental pet resume (a one-page introduction for a landlord or agent) — can open with a pet from the app already filled in, so you never retype a 15-digit microchip number.

  1. Open the pet's profile and tap ⋯ in the top corner.
  2. Choose Make a pet sitter sheet or Make a rental resume. The app explains what's about to open.
  3. Pick how to continue:
    • Open — loads the page in a browser inside the app. Handy for a quick look, or if you'll finish it on your phone or tablet.
    • Share link — opens your phone's share sheet. AirDrop it to your Mac, send it to yourself in Messages, WhatsApp or email, or drop it in a note you can open on your computer.
    • Cancel — nothing is opened or sent.
  4. Open the link on your computer. A banner confirms “Filled in [your pet]'s details from the app”, and the top section of the page is already complete.
  5. Fill in the rest, check the preview, then print it or save it as a PDF from your browser's print dialog.

Everything else — feeding, medications, routines, emergency contacts, rental references — you add on the page. A photo is too big to fit in a link, so upload one there if you want it on the printout. If the app has no weigh-in for the pet yet, the resume's weight field is left for you to fill in. Anything the page can't read (say, a value that's too long) is listed in the banner so you know what to check.

Working on the page

  • It's one-way. Changing a detail on the page changes that printout only — never the pet in the app. To fix a detail for good, edit the pet in the app and send it again.
  • Your draft stays in that browser. What you type is kept on that computer so you can come back to it, and isn't sent to us or to the app.
  • Sending the same pet again refreshes the details at the top and keeps everything you'd added below.
  • Sending a different pet starts a fresh form so one animal's feeding or medication notes never print under another's name. Household details carry over — on the sitter sheet your contacts and vet (but not the insurer, which is per pet); on the resume your contact details. The banner tells you which pet's draft was cleared.
  • No “add to the app” code. These pages normally offer a QR code to add the pet to Household Pet. When the pet came from the app that code is hidden, because scanning it would create a duplicate. Clear the form brings it back.
Keep the link to yourself. It contains your pet's name and microchip number, so send it only to your own devices rather than posting it anywhere. Those details live in the part of the address that browsers never send to a server, and the page removes them from the address bar as soon as it opens — so a reload, bookmark or copied address won't carry them any further. Sharing the finished printout with a sitter or landlord is up to you.
The link opened a blank form — what happened?
Make sure you opened the whole link — some apps trim long addresses when you copy them, and the pet's details are at the very end. Sending it again with Share link (rather than copying and pasting) usually fixes it. If it still comes up blank, update the app and try once more.

Paperwork, sorted

Documents & notes

Every pet has its own filing cabinet. Open Health (or Edit pet) to find it, sorted into folders:

  • Notes — Temperament, handling tips, anything worth writing down
  • Documents — Certificates, registration, receipts
  • Food — Diet sheets and feeding instructions — also under Nutrition
  • Insurance — Your policy documents — also under Care
  • Information for Vet — The only folder a vet you share with can see
  • Emergency File — What someone needs if things go wrong
  • Vet Reports — PDF reports you have generated and saved

Add a file or snap a photo of a paper record with the camera. Tap a file to open it, or use its menu to share, rename, replace or delete it. Files are stored privately in your account. Each file shows whether it's still waiting to upload, synced and available offline, or stored in the cloud and downloaded when you open it.

One tidy record

The health log

The health log is the heart of the app — one record, newest first, of everything that happens to your pet. To add an entry, open a pet and tap Add health event, then pick a type:

  • Vaccination — C3, C5, F3 and boosters.
  • Medication — what was given and when.
  • Vet visit — notes from an appointment.
  • Flea / worm treatment — parasite prevention.
  • Grooming — clips, nails, baths.
  • Note — anything else worth remembering.

Each entry takes an optional name (such as “C5”), the vet or clinic, a date and notes. Tap Save and it lands in the log.

Reminders set themselves. Log a vaccination and Household Pet adds a reminder for 12 months later. Log a flea or worm treatment and it adds one three months later. Change or delete either from the Reminders tab.

The log also collects results from the AI symptom assistant (as Symptom entries), weigh-ins, and reminders you've ticked off (marked Done). Use an entry's ⋯ menu to edit or delete it. Everything here flows into vet reports and is visible to the people you've shared the pet with.

Spot the trend

Weight tracking

Gradual weight gain or loss is easy to miss day to day. Open a pet, tap Health (or Edit pet), then tap the Weight row.

  • The top shows the latest weight, the change and the number of entries.
  • Switch the chart between 1M, 6M, 1Y and All.
  • Tap + Add weight to record a weigh-in, in kilograms.
  • Every reading is listed under History, where you can delete a mistake.

The latest weight also shows on the pet's profile, and the whole trend can go into a vet report.

Weight — every weigh-in charted, with the change at a glance.

Day-to-day care

Activity tracking

The health log is for the medical record; activity tracking is for everyday life. Open a pet and tap the Activity tile for a shared feed of what's happened lately — grouped by day, with Today and Yesterday at the top — so the whole household can see at a glance whether the dog's been walked or the cat's been fed.

Tap Add and pick Walk, Play, Feeding, Grooming, Potty or Rest — or Other with your own label. Each entry takes a time, an optional note and quick toggles for poop, pee, water and ate — handy when you're watching tummy troubles or a fussy eater.

Every entry shows who logged it, and it syncs to everyone sharing the pet — including a sitter you've given access to — so nobody double-feeds or misses a walk. Tap an entry to edit it, including its date and time. Activity tracking is part of the free plan.

In a hurry? Say it instead: Quick log turns “walked Bowie for 40 minutes” into a Walk entry for you to check and save.

Say it, don't type it

Quick log

Quick log turns one sentence into log entries. Tap Quick log on Home to log for any of your pets, or 🎙️ Quick log on a pet's page to log for just that pet. Tap the microphone on your keyboard and say what happened, or type it, then tap Turn into entries. One sentence can cover several pets and several things:

  • “Walked Bowie for 40 minutes, he did a poo” becomes a Walk with the poop toggle on.
  • “Fed both dogs at 7” becomes a Feeding entry for each dog, at 7 o'clock.
  • “Gave Luna her flea treatment this morning, she weighed 4.2 kilos” becomes a flea treatment and a weigh-in in Luna's health log.
  • “Remind me to worm both dogs next Friday” becomes a reminder for each dog.

Check it, then save

Nothing is saved until you say so. The app shows what it heard as a card per entry. Untick anything that's wrong, add a note, or pick the pet if it asks Which pet was this? Reminders show their date and time, and you can change either before saving; a time that has already passed can't be saved. Anything it couldn't make sense of is shown under Didn't catch. When it looks right, tap Save. Entries land in the health log, the activity feed or the Reminders tab exactly as if you'd typed them, and everyone you share the pet with sees them.

No doubled reminders. A vaccination or flea treatment logged by voice sets its usual next-due reminder, just like one added by hand. If you also said when the next one is due (“next one in 3 months”), that date is used instead.

What it won't do

  • Give advice. Quick log writes down what you tell it. A symptom becomes a Symptom entry, nothing more. If you're worried, open the AI symptom assistant on your pet's page afterwards, or call your vet.
  • Set repeating reminders. “Every month” sets the next one and notes the repeat; set the one after when it comes round.
  • Work without a connection. Turning a sentence into entries happens on our servers. Offline, or if it can't understand you, the whole sentence is kept as a Note for you to save, so nothing you said is lost. The same happens if you reach the hourly limit.

Your voice and your words

Household Pet never receives a recording. Speech-to-text is your keyboard's own dictation feature, provided by Apple or Google under their terms. Only the text reaches us, along with your pets' names and species so it can tell them apart. It's processed by the same cloud AI service as the symptom assistant, in Australia, isn't used to train AI models, and isn't kept on our servers unless you save it. Quick log is part of the free plan.

Never miss a booster

Reminders & alerts

The Reminders tab covers the things that actually recur. Dog and cat vaccination schedules follow Australian conventions — C3 / C5 and F3 cadences and annual boosters — and flea-and-worm timing suits our climate rather than a generic overseas default.

Reminders are split into Overdue, Upcoming and Done. The next few also appear on Home and on each pet's profile.

Adding a reminder

  1. On the Reminders tab, tap + (or New reminder).
  2. Choose the pet, give it a title (such as “Annual vaccination”) and pick a kind.
  3. Set the date and time, add any notes, and tap Save.

For dogs and cats, Set up vaccination schedule on the pet's profile adds the next dose for you. When you mark a vaccination reminder done, the following dose is scheduled automatically.

Snooze, complete, edit

Tap any reminder to change it, snooze it, mark it done or delete it. Done reminders move to the Done tab and show in the pet's health log.

Reminders — Overdue, Upcoming and Done, on the Australian schedule.

Getting alerts

The first time you create a reminder, the app asks whether you'd like alerts — nothing is sent unless you say yes. After that, your phone alerts you at the time you chose, and tapping the alert opens that reminder. Alerts for a pet stop if you delete it or lose access to it.

A reminder didn't alert me — what should I check?
In order: that notifications are allowed for Household Pet (iPhone: Settings → Notifications; Android: Settings → Apps → Notifications) — if you tapped Not now when the app asked, turn them on there; that a Focus / Do Not Disturb mode isn't silencing it; and that the reminder is set for a future date and time. If all three look right and it still didn't fire, contact support with the pet name and reminder title.

When something's off

AI symptom assistantPlus

When your pet seems unwell, open their profile and tap How is the pet today?

  1. Pick the closest symptom — vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, coughing, itching, bleeding, trouble breathing and more — or choose Other symptoms and describe it in your own words.
  2. Answer a few quick yes/no questions, such as whether it has lasted more than 24 hours or whether you've noticed any blood.
  3. Tap See guidance.

The answer comes back in one of three bands:

  • Monitor at home — keep an eye on it for now.
  • Call your vet today — worth getting professional eyes on it.
  • Emergency — go to the nearest 24-hour clinic now.

Each result explains its reasoning, lists suggested actions, and is saved to the health log as a Symptom entry so you can show your vet later. Tap Start over to check something else. The assistant needs an internet connection.

A result — one of three clear bands, with suggested next steps.
Important: the symptom assistant is deliberately cautious and is not a substitute for examination by a registered veterinarian. If it points you toward a vet, trust it. For a genuine emergency, contact your vet or a 24-hour clinic straight away — the result screen has a button to find the nearest one.

Walk in prepared

Vet reportsPlus

Heading to an appointment? Household Pet builds a clean PDF summary of a pet's history to show or send to your vet.

  1. Open the pet and tap Vet report.
  2. Choose what to include: Pet photo, Vaccinations, Medications & parasite, Weight and Vet visits & notes. The pet's profile details are always on the cover.
  3. For weight, choose Chart over time or Latest measurement.
  4. Tap Generate PDF and check the preview.
  5. Tap Save to records to keep it in the pet's Vet Reports folder, Share to send it by email or message, or Discard.
1 · Choose what to include, then Generate PDF.
2 · The finished report — save it, share it or discard it.

Reports are built on our servers from your synced records, so generating one needs a connection. Once saved to records, a report opens offline like any other document.

The whole household

Household & vet sharing

Pets are rarely one person's job. Open a pet, tap Care, then Access to reach Manage access. It shows how many of the pet's 10 slots are in use — the owner, co-owners and pending invites all count.

Co-owners

Free

A partner, housemate or family member with full access to add and edit records. Enter their email and tap Send invite. Invites last 7 days; if they don't have the app yet, the invite is waiting when they sign up with that email.

Guests

Vet free · others Plus

Temporary, read-only access for someone looking after your pet. Pick a role, enter their email and share. Guests sign in with that email and never become co-owners.

What each guest can see

RoleSeesDefault length
VetProfile, complete health log and your Information for Vet folder90 days
Sitter PlusProfile, reminders, current medications and emergency info — and can log feedings, walks and completed reminders14 days
Boarder PlusProfile, reminders, vaccination records and emergency info14 days
Groomer PlusBasics, handling notes and grooming reminders7 days

Leaving and removing

Owners can revoke a pending invite, remove a member or end a guest's access at any time. Anyone can Leave this pet if they aren't its only member; if the owner leaves, the longest-standing co-owner becomes the owner. Someone who is removed keeps whatever had already synced to their device, but sees no new changes.

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini & co.

Using an AI assistant

Already talking to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity about a vet email or a treatment plan? Your assistant can turn it into a ready-to-save reminder — or a new pet — for Household Pet. There's nothing to install, connect or sign in to, and it works on the free plan.

How it works

  1. Give it the cheat sheet. In a new chat, paste: Read https://au.household.pet/handoff.json and follow it to build me Household Pet reminder links. It points the assistant at a page we publish that explains exactly how our links are built. Once per conversation is enough.
  2. Ask in plain words. For example: “Remind me to worm Bowie on 3 November at 9am”, or “Give me flea treatment reminders for Frankie on the first of each month for the next six months”. You get back one link per reminder.
  3. Open the link. On a computer it opens our add-a-reminder page with everything filled in and a QR code ready — scan it with your phone's camera. On the phone that has the app, the link opens Household Pet directly.
  4. Check and save. The app shows what the link carries and asks which pet the reminder is for. Nothing is created until you tap save.

The full walkthrough, including a longer version of the instructions for assistants that can't open web pages, is on Add a reminder with an AI assistant.

What an assistant can and can't do

It can

  • Build a reminder link — title, kind (vaccination, medication, vet visit, parasite treatment and more), date, time, notes and the pet's name.
  • Build an add-pet link — name, species, breed, sex, date of birth, microchip number, colour and markings — the same fields as Add a pet from your computer.
  • Work out dates from a vet's letter or a schedule you paste in.
  • Answer general questions about what Household Pet does.

It can't

  • See your pets, records, reminders or account.
  • Save, change or delete anything in the app on its own.
  • Put several reminders in one link — ask for one link per reminder.
  • Make the pet sitter sheet or rental resume links — those come from the app itself (see Send a pet to your computer).
Always glance before you save. A date the assistant worked out for you is the likeliest thing to be wrong. The add-a-reminder page writes it out in full with the weekday, and the app shows it again before saving — a wrong link costs you one tap to decline. Remember a reminder needs a pet to belong to, so add the pet first if it isn't in the app yet.
Is my data shared with the AI assistant?
No. The assistant only writes a web address; it never talks to Household Pet and never sees anything in your account. What you tell the assistant is covered by that assistant's own privacy terms, so share only what you're comfortable with — a pet's name and a date are all a reminder needs.
Building links for someone else? (developers and assistants)
The rules are published as JSON at https://au.household.pet/handoff.json — every parameter, the accepted values and the length limits. Use a prefilled /add-reminder/ or /add-pet/ link for someone at a computer, or a /import/ link for someone already on their phone. Read the contract rather than copying an example: some kind values don't match their on-screen labels.

Works anywhere

Offline & syncing

Household Pet is offline-first. Everything you do is saved to your device immediately — you never wait on the network — and uploaded the moment you're back online. The app keeps you signed in without signal, so your pets, health log and reminders are there at the vet, in a basement clinic or out of range.

More → Sync shows what's happening: changes uploading, changes waiting, or Everything is up to date. Under More → Offline access, Download over mobile data controls whether documents are saved to your device on any connection or only on Wi-Fi. Either way, you can open a document over mobile data.

A few things do need a connection: Quick log, the AI symptom assistant, generating a vet report and requesting a data export. Quick log keeps what you said as a note when you're offline.

Changes say they're waiting to upload — is my data stuck?
Your data is safe on your device regardless. If More → Sync keeps showing changes waiting, or Sync paused — will retry automatically, for more than a few minutes while you have working internet, pull down on Home to check again, or turn Airplane Mode on and off. Still stuck? Contact support with roughly when it stopped.

That's the whole app

If you have read this far you already know how it works. The rest takes about two minutes — add your first pet, log one vaccination or dose, and the reminders start from there.

Household Pet is operated from Australia. Veterinary information shown in our app is general guidance only — always consult a registered veterinarian for medical concerns about your pet.
